Archives - Animal Face Off

For this series screened on Discovery Channel we made a number of Biomechanical animals and a 7M Colossal Squid. Pictured left is the model squid undergoing its first tests in water to establish buoyancy and stability levels.

Divers are seen here joining the head and mantle sections together prior to testing.

All the tests were undertaken in a diving pool for safety and controllability.

Once all the testing was successfully completed the squid was ready for filming in the ocean.

Pictured left we see the squid just before it descends and starts its journey in the open sea. The model was towed slowly at a depth of 5 to 10 meters.

To create the biomechanical animals we first had to sculpt replica skulls in polystyrene.

Once the skulls had been reproduced in metal we refined and polished all the teeth.

The next stage is applying hydraulic rigging for movement.

The final stage was to marry all the rigged skulls to remote vehicles. Ready for action.
